The Island
The Isle of Harris sits off Scotland’s north-west coast, its history reaching back to the Neolithic era. For centuries this was Gaelic-speaking country, shaped by Clan MacLeod and a way of life built on crofting, fishing and weaving — traditions still very much alive today.
Harris Tweed
1840s
Lady Catherine Herbert, Countess of Dunmore, introduces the cloth to fashionable sporting circles.
1909 – 10
The Orb trademark is created to protect genuine Harris Tweed from imitation.
1993
The Harris Tweed Act enshrines it in law: handwoven by islanders, in their homes, from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.
